Jaggery based healthy sweet for all festivities, the hayagreeva is one of my favorite sweets of south Karnataka.

This is a recipe I have learnt from my maternal grandmother. It is a traditional sweet she used to make being from a Madhwa Brahmin family.
This recipe serves 5-6 people and takes about 45mins of cooking time.
Ingredients:
Chana dal - 1 cup
Water - 3 cups
Jaggery - 1 cup
Cloves - 4-5
Poppy seeds - 2 tsp
Dry coconut/desiccated coconut - 2 tbsp
Ghee - 2 tbsp + 2 tbsp
Cashew nuts- 10 [halved]
Raisins - 2 tbsp
Cardamom powder - 1/4 tsp
Method:
In a pressure cooker, cook the chana dal with 3 cups of water and cloves for 5 whistles. In a kadai, roast poppy seeds a bit and grind it with dry or desiccated coconut to form a powder. In the kadai, heat 2 tbsp of ghee and add cashew nuts and raisins. Once they are roasted, transfer them to a bowl. Drain off the water from the cooked chana dal and transfer it into the kadai. Add jaggery and cook till the jaggery melts and combines well with the cooked chana dal. Add the poppy seed mixture and mix well. Add 2 tbsp ghee and cardamom powder and combine well. Add the roasted dry fruits and serve.
Enjoy hayagreeva hot with some ghee on top or chilled just out of the refrigerator. Do let me know how you liked it.
