Congress Masala

Spiced peanuts are usually called Congress kaldekai ( Kadlekai = peanuts in Kannada). It is very commonly used in Bangalore, mostly in chaat items. It can be had as is but why not amp it up on a raining evening with a cup of coffee?



The Congress kadlekai is easily available in Bangalore. It is roasted peanuts to which red chilli powder, pepper powder, turmeric powder and salt are added when the peanuts are still hot so that they get coated with the spices. Congress Masala is usually available in places where dry chaats are sold. It is very easy to prepare and can be prepared very quickly.


The preparation takes about 20 mins for 4 servings.


 

Ingredients:


For green chutney:

  • Green chillies - 10

  • Ginger - 1 inch

  • Coriander seeds - 2 tsp

  • Coriander leaves - 1/4 bunch

  • Salt - to taste

For sweet chutney:

  • Tamarind - 100g

  • Jaggery - 100g

  • Cumin powder - 1 tsp

  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp

  • Salt - 1/2 tsp

For Assembling:

  • Congress kadlekai - 1 cup (spiced peanuts)

  • Onion - 2-3 tbsp (finely chopped)

  • Carrot - 3-4 tbsp (grated)

  • Green chilli - 1 small (finely chopped)

  • Green chutney - 1 tbsp

  • Sweet chutney - 1 tbsp

  • Salt - to taste

  • Coriander leaves - 2 tbsp (finely chopped)

  • Lemon juice - 2 tsp

  • Sev - As required

Method:


Grind green chillies, ginger, coriander seeds, coriander leaves and salt. Add little water as required to form chutney consistency.


Soak tamarind with jaggery and a little water. Squeeze out the tamarind and add cumin powder, red chilli powder, salt and mix.


In a large bowl, add the peanuts, chopped onion, grated carrot, chopped green chilli, green chutney and sweet chutney. The additional green chilli is optional and can be avoided if you feel the recipe is already spicy enough. Add salt as required only for the vegetables as the peanuts and chutneys already have salt in them. Mix all the ingredients well. Add lemon juice, chopped leaves, sev and give it a slight mix. Serve immediately when the peanuts are still crunchy. Garnish with sev and coriander leaves on the plate.
