Peas Pulao with Dal Tadka

If you want to prepare something special just for your family on a nice Sunday afternoon, peas pulao is the dish you should try. Dal tadka is the best combination with peas pulao which compliments the pulao amazingly.



This is a very basic pulao recipe which I am sure many of you already know. The dal tadka recipe is also very simple and can be prepared quickly.


The pulao and dal needs about an hour of preparation for 4 servings.


 

Ingredients:


For peas pulao:

  • Rice - 2 cups (soaked for 30 mins)

  • Ghee - 2 tbsp

  • Cumin seeds - 2 tsp

  • Bay leaf - 1

  • Cinnamon stick - 1 inch

  • Cloves - 5-6

  • Green chilli - 1 (slit vertically)

  • Ginger - 1 inch

  • Green Peas - 1 1/2 cup

  • Water - 3 cups

  • Salt - to taste

For Dal Tadka:

  • Toor dal - 1/2 cup

  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp + 1/4 tsp

  • Salt - 1/2 tsp + 1/2 tsp

  • Water - 1 1/2 cup

  • Ghee - 2 tbsp

  • Cumin - 1/2 tsp

  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp

  • Asafoetida - 1 pinch

  • Dried red chilli - 2

  • Ginger - 1 inch

  • Green chilli - 1 (slit vertically)

  • Onion - 1 medium sized (chopped finely)

  • Tomato - 1 medium sized (chopped finely)

  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp

  • Coriander powder - 1/2 tsp

  • Garam masala - 1/4 tsp

  • Kasuri methi - 1 tsp

  • Coriander leaves - 1/2 tbsp (finely chopped)

Method:


In a pressure cooker, heat ghee. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, bay leaf, cinnamon stick, cloves and saute. Add green chilli and ginger and saute again, Add green peas and soaked rice. Mix well and then add water. Once the water starts to boil, add salt and mix mix well. Pressure cook for two whistles.


In another pressure cooker, add toor dal, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp salt and 1 1/2 cup water. Pressure cook for three whistles.

In a kadai, heat ghee. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida. Add dried red chilli, green chilli and ginger and saute. Add chopped onion and saute till they turn translucent. Add chopped tomato and saute till they soften. Add 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder and mix well. Add the pressure cooked tool dal and mix. Add Garam masala, Kasuri methi and 1/2 tsp salt and mix well. Finally add coriander leaves and serve.

 

As you can see, this is a very basic and simple recipe which does not require a lot of ingredients. It also does not require a lot of preparation time and easy to follow. Do let me know how you enjoyed the recipe.
