Pineapple Gojju
Updated: Oct 2
Sweet, tangy and mildly spiced, Pineapple gojju is a delicious home-style dish which can be had with rice or Chapathi.

Pineapple gojju is a traditional Karnatake-style dish that showcases the region's love for balancing sweet, sour, spicy and mildly bitter flavours in a single preparation. This is my mother's recipe which she probably got it from her mother and so on.
Ingredients:
Urad Dal - 1 tsp
Chana Dal - 1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp
Pepper(whole) - 1/4 tsp
Sesame seeds - 2 1/2 tsp
Dried red chillies - 5
Fresh coconut - 1/4 cup
Tamarind - 1 small lemon sized
Jaggery - 1 small lemon sized
Salt - to taste
Oil - 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Hing - 1/4 tsp
Pineapple - 2 cups (roughly chopped)
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Method:
In a pan dry roast urad dal, chana dal, fenugreek seeds, pepper, sesame seeds and dried red chillies. Grind them together once they have cooled a bit with fresh coconut, tamarind and jaggery.
In a kadai, heat some oil. Temper mustard seeds and hing. Add the chopped pineapple and let them cook for a bit. Add turmeric powder, the ground paste and salt. Let the pineapple cook with all the spices and its juice for a bit and then it is ready to be served.
Serve this pineapple gojju with hot rice and a dollop of ghee for a simple meal that is bursting with flavour.
